I read more than normal the past several days, absorbing so many views and opinions of a gunshot in Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, concluding with Donald Trump’s waving his fist and shouting, “Fight” several times prior to being spirited to safety.
Someone researched and posted historical instances of the “fisted salute.”
There have been mentions of a fisted salute, declaring supremacy, dating back to Roman rule and perhaps earlier.
There’s online mention of it regarding the Sedition Act of July 14, 1798. You can google for its content.
It was introduced in 1921, accompanied with, “Sieg Heil,” as part of Hitler’s political campaign and secret, involved plan to gain control of Germany and beyond.
In photos dating back to 1964, Muhammad Ali pointed his fist toward upcoming or downed opponents and in promotional photo ops.
On 10-16-1968, at the Olympic Games in Mexico City, 200 meter winners, Tommie Smith and John Carlos each pointed a Black Power gloved fist in support of equal rights and recognition.
The action of a fisted salute can signify support of a cause; considered as the holder’s superiority; demonstrate armed force allegiance to their leader; a defiant gesture to those deemed to be an enemy or be done to intimidate the meek.
Herein is no intention to impress, intimidate or convince anyone of anything. Rather, it’s a compilation of how differences can seem similar, depending on the means to justify the end, good or not.
Read, think, discuss, decide, vote, pray!
